Aksa is a popular beach and a picnic / vacation spot in Aksa village at Malad, Mumbai. When my parents first took me to this beach, it used to be very clean and least visited with a variety of snails and shells found here. It’s not the same anymore but it’s still a good picnic spot for weekends. On weekends you’d find a lot of locals running food stalls for sandwiches, chaat items, roasted corn, ice-gola and other things which keep the visitors entertained.
With many private cottages, hotels and resorts, this beach is a popular weekend destination with youngsters. I remember as a kid, my friends and I would cycle around 8-9 kms all the way to the beach with our cricket gear and would play there from morning to afternoon. It was sheer fun. We would even venture out in the waters but wouldn’t further than knee deep water as the beach is considered to be very dangerous for swimming due to heavy undercurrents.
Warning: From swimming point of view, Aksa beach isn’t safe as there have been many drowning incidences. Strong currents and shifting sand make the beach very dangerous.
Few days back on one of the weekends my friend Bharat and I visited the beach with our cameras. At that point of time, Bharat owned a Canon EOS 60D DSLR Camera and I had my Canon SX50HS digital camera. At this beach, we noticed this small forest-like area adjoining the shore. It was right at the border point of Aksa & Dana Paani beaches. Almost like a forest, we saw that this place housed many a bird species. I could catch a glimpse of birds like White-throated Kingfisher, Common Sandpiper, Red-whiskered Bulbul, White-browed Bulbul, Asiatic Koel and few more whose names are unknown.
